Salina Chupetlovska is an Orthodox widow who lives in the countryside in Bulgaria. She has very religious neighbors and she feels isolated from the outside world. One day, a young man named Dimitri arrives at Salina's farm seeking refuge after being banished from his village by his superstitious neighbors. Although she is reluctant at first, Salina eventually accepts the help the young man offers her and gets to know him. Gradually the two begin to fall in love despite the objections of the neighbors who don't want a stranger in the village. As the relationship between Dimitri and Salina begins to blossom, they must contend with the obstacles imposed by the traditional social and religious practices of the rural Bulgarian community. Together, they will try to find a way to get married despite the opposition of the other inhabitants of the village.
