Picture of Orangutan Ukiyo-e

Origin Story

Once upon a time there was an orangutan named Kuma. He lived in the tropical jungle of the islands of South Asia. Every day, Kuma would walk through the forest, exploring the various plants and animals that call it home. One day, while he was walking, he came across a Japanese artist named Keisai. Keisai had come to the jungle to capture the colors and sounds of nature on his canvas. When he saw Kuma, he was immediately inspired by his beauty and natural charm and decided to paint him in traditional ukiyo-e form.

Kuma was very flattered that the artist wanted to immortalize his image forever and gladly agreed to pose for him for several hours every day for several weeks. When the painting was finally completed, Keisai proudly presented his creation to Kuma who was amazed by this masterpiece that reflected his unique personality so well and so finely captured his subtle facial expressions. She knew that this work will be preserved through generations and passed on to others as a priceless treasure that will always represent her free and joyful spirit!
