Picture of Bulldog Ukiyo-e

Origin Story

The bulldog was a much loved and valued animal in ancient Japan. An ukiyo-e, or floating image, is a form of Japanese painting that began to be produced in the early 17th century. One of the most famous artists who created ukiyo-e is Hiroshige. He produced many works featuring bulldogs, one of which was particularly popular.

The artwork showed a bulldog sitting on its hindquarters, its front legs tucked under it as it gazed upwards, eyes filled with admiration and respect for its master. The colors used by Hiroshige were bright and vibrant; he managed to capture the unique personality of the dog in his composition. The canvas represented an intimate scene between the dog and its owner; you could see that the latter took care of his furry friend with great love and tenderness.

People were immediately drawn to this canvas because it reflected the deep bonds between humans and domesticated animals - a special relationship that has existed for millennia but continues to this day. This ukiyo-e has remained popular over the years thanks to the talented artist that is Hiroshige and the timeless beauty within.
