The Sharpei originated in China and was bred for hunting, cattle work and guarding. It has adapted to a varied natural environment, including mountains, coastal plains and agricultural lands. The Sharpei is known to be very resistant to weather and extreme heat. It can easily adapt to all types of climate. Its short, dense coat protects it from cold, damp temperatures as well as the sun's harmful UV rays. Sturdy legs allow it to walk over tough terrain without bulk.
