It was at the age of 16 that he decided to enlist in the Chinese army, where he served for almost 10 years. Then he turned to space research and became an astronaut in 1989.

During his career, Seng Yang carried out several important space missions for China, some of which even led to significant scientific advances. He is best known for being the first Chinese astronaut to carry out a mission on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2003.
