Biography

Giacinta Coppola was an Italian astronaut, born March 17, 1951 and died October 3, 2016. She spent her life exploring space, learning new technologies, and sharing her knowledge with others.


She began her career as an astronomer in an Italian observatory when she was still a teenager. After graduating from university in physics and astronomy, she joined NASA where she specialized in space exploration. She became a member of the Gemini 5 program which aimed to test systems for human spaceflight. She also became the first Italian woman to go into space in 1969, earning her much respect and admiration.


During her career at NASA, Giacinta Coppola worked on several important projects such as the Apollo 13 program and the first manned flight to Mars. She is also actively involved in encouraging young women to choose scientific professions so that they can contribute to technological and social progress. In recognition of her remarkable commitment to promoting science among young Italian girls, she was honored by the Italian Ministry of National Education in 2002.
